Let%26#39;s start a new thread, recommending some cheap but great places to eat in Manhattan for $15 or less per person for dinner. Many tourists that come to Manhattan, often get the misperception that restaurant food is expensive because they don%26#39;t venture out of the midtown area. However, there are LOTS of great inexpensive restaurants all over Manhattan. I lived in Manhattan for six years and found some great restaurants where dinner is $15 or less per person.
Here are my favorites:
Indian Food: Raj Mahal (6th Street, bet 1st %26amp; 2nd Avenues) Dinner Specials are $9.95 and include soup, hot meat or vegetable samosa appetizer, choice of main course, a glass of soda, and pudding. The soup is delicious. As is the samosa. We have in the past asked them to give us the Chicken Tikka Masala as the main course (even though it isn%26#39;t on the specials menu) and pay an extra $1 or $2. It is the best we%26#39;ve ever had. Creamy with large pieces of chicken. We are not crazy about the pudding, but to each his own. This is in our opinion, the best Indian Restaurant in NYC. On the weekends they even have live music.
Mexican Food: Maryanne%26#39;s (corner of 5th Street and 2nd Avenue) Most entrees cost $8-$12 and include beans and rice. Lots of food for a small price. Like Sangria? a Half pitcher is only $9 and fills 4 cups.
Thai: Sea (2nd Ave- near 5th Street) Most meals are between $8-$12. Try the Rama The King entree... delicious peanut sauce. OR Room Service at 166 8th Ave Btwn 18th %26amp; 19th St Entrees also between $10-$15
BBQ: Ok, while its not the best BBQ out there, you can%26#39;t beat the prices at the Dallas BBQ restaurants that are all over NYC. Most meals are $10-$12 and include cornbread and a baked potato. The ribs are pretty good as are the honey glazed chicken wings. Get HUGE alcoholic Pina Colada or Strawberry Daquiri for only $8.
Japanese: Want to have some fun? go to East Japanese at 366 Third Avenue Btwn 26th %26amp; 27th St for sushi. There is a conveyor belt that goes around the room carrying sushi plates. Each plate is color coded for cost- $2-$6 per plate. Great sushi, very fun.
I%26#39;ll post more if I think of any more great restaurants!

Will that take long? You lived there for 6 years.
Nice thread though. Look forward to the replies.

Cheap/Great Places to eat in Manhattan
well.. yes, i could go on and on... but the above post is a start :-) and besides, i%26#39;m always looking for new places to try too!
Sorry, but just reading Dallas BBQ and Mary Ann%26#39;s in the same thread makes me vomit a bit in my mouth. The quality of the food just isn%26#39;t there, and the frozen ';margaritas'; are just slushees with not enough booze. No matter how cheap something is, it%26#39;s not a bargain if the food and drinks are lousy.
Mary Ann%26#39;s used to be ok, but as I continued to go there, they got dirtier and dirtier. Most of their locations have an underlying smell like men%26#39;s bathroom air fresheners.
(At least you didn%26#39;t mention Senor Swanky%26#39;s or Gonzalez Y Gonzalez.) I often recommend El Cantinero, but friends of mine went there recently and were not thrilled. Oh well.
Since you%26#39;re a relatively new transplant to NYC, keep reading this forum and you%26#39;ll find awesome new places to go.
For example, have you tried Yuca Bar and Cafe in the East Village? Much better food and drinks in a fun nabe.

Or better yet, try Cafe Con Leche or Pio Pio. I haven%26#39;t tried Pinche Taqueria, but it gets raves.
For Indian food, please try to leave E. 6th Street and go somewhere like Jackson Heights in Queens.
Welcome to New York!
These suggestions weren%26#39;t very good two years ago, either:
