Subway stop in Brooklyn

Hi Everyone, counting the days to my trip at the end of June and really working on my itinerary. I%26#39;m hoping to spend a day in Brooklyn but I want to get there by subway and then walk back over brooklyn bridge. My hotel is on 81st and CPW. I think the A and C lines will get me there but I want to know which stop I should get off in Brooklyn that is closest to DUMBO and the waterfront. Also I checked out washington st and water st on google street view and they look pretty deserted, is it safe to walk to the waterfront that way?
