Subway....art and architecture

I just had to share. I received a wonderful book for Mother%26#39;s Day, Subway Style, from the New York Transit Museum. It%26#39;s a historical journey through the stations highlighting the ceramic designs, metalwork, lighting, furnishings, signs, advertising, and the cars themselves. Fascinating stuff for anyone addicted to New York ;))

Here%26#39;s another one for you: ';The Works: Anatomy of a City'; by Kate Ascher :-)

Thanks so much for the link, CockleCove! I%26#39;m going to order this.

Oh, I would love that! I try to take pictures of the signs and mosaics because I think they are so neat looking. I%26#39;m sure the locals just roll their eyes at me when they see this!

Thanks, Rassi.

I%26#39;d give my eye-teeth to see the old City Hall Station -- closed (except for the occasional tour) since 1945:

This year%26#39;s tour of the City Hall Station is Saturday, May 30 :-)

Ah, man! Wonder if I can convince my DH that we should take a trip again so soon.....

My favorite piece of artwork is the zoetrope graffitti in the old abondoned Myrtle Avenue station between Dekalb and the Manhattan Bridge on the %26#39;Q%26#39; and %26#39;B%26#39; line in Brooklyn. The murals are spaced between the columns and as the train goes through the station it looks like the art work is moving. Here ..... take a look;

Those videos are so cool! We loved looking at the artwork in the subway when we visited.

When visitors take the subway, it pays to look around and enjoy the station. For example, W. 86th St. (#1 line) has tiles of drawings done by local school kids. W. 79 (#1) has beautiful raised tiles where walls meet ceilings. W. 59th St (Columbus Circle) has tiles of old sailing ships (Chris Columbus)

Astor Place Station (#6 line) is one of the original 28 subway stations and is on the List of Registered Historic Places in New York and has great ';beaver'; tiles in honor of John Jacob Astor.

Brooks, thanks for that great link to City Hall Station - it looks fabilous! Karen where did you get the information on when the next tour is - I%26#39;d love to have that for when I plan my next visit.

Those zoetrope videos also look cool - I could have swarn Marge Simpson appears towards the end!
