Walking around in NYC

We will be in NYC for two nights in July staying in E 31st St. I%26#39;ve never got to spend time here before and even now 2 nights is all I get. Just wonderinbg about walking around day and night. We will be visting places like MOMA, PS1 and a couple of other galleries, plus would really like to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Forgive my ignorance but am of course really excited about doing these things and hopefully much more in 48hrs, is it plausible that you could safely walk to all these places from East 31st. Thank you for any advice.

Walking around in NYC

Hi

I was in NYC in April and I felt safer there than my hometown Adelaide. I went to watch Chicago with my girlfriend( local girl) and after the show at about midnight we decided to go to china town to have dinner. we walked around there at 1 am then went back to our hotel in wall street area at 2 am with no hassles whatsoever. Goodluck with ur trip U will be impressed.

You%26#39;re asking 2 questions. One is safety and the other is distance. PS 1 is in Long Island City in Queens. WHile it%26#39;s possible to walk, it%26#39;s not likely you%26#39;d want to. I think you need to look at a map.

maps.google.com

is easy to use. You could just type the name of your hotel (add NYC) to say MOMA nyc and get a map with distance. If you select walking (rather than driving which is the default setting) you%26#39;ll get an idea of distance and time it would take. There are many many posts on walking the Brooklyn Bridge at night if you do a text search.

With only 2 days, I%26#39;d suggest a careful itinerary plan. List what you want to see. Then plot them on the map and try grouping things together by location. The 2 things I%26#39;d avoid are a visit to the top of the Empire state building and a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Both take too much time for such a short trip. You can see the SOL from another boat cruise and you can go to Top of the Rock in Rock. Ctr. which is nicer and faster.

New York is essentially a mix of different neighborhoods. Here is a neighborhood map so you get an idea of what I%26#39;m talking about.

While it is certainly safe to walk around the areas you wish to visit, they are not really walking distance from your hotel.

Moma is located on West 53rd Street. That is a mile to the north,and across town. PS I is in Queens. The Brooklyn Bridge entrance ramp is in the City Hall Area. The way to do all of this is to get a MetroCard, take the subway to your destination and walk around when you get there.

BTW, walking the Brooklyn Bridge at Sunset is one of the cooler things to do in NYC or anywhere else for that matter. It truly is amazing. Also, when you get to the Brooklyn side of the Bridge, there are two great neighborhoods to explore. DUMBO is down the stairs and Brooklyn Heights is down the ramp.

Please use the subway and buses to get TO the places you want to explore -- Distances are TOO far to do everything you want to do in one day on foot.

About safety - you can walk all over the place and be just fine. You have a short period to be there so plan carefully. Walking is faster than cabs or buses. Subway is best for longer distances. For instance, you might want to subway down to the Brooklyn Bridge before your walk. Have fun. It%26#39;s a beautiful city!

Thank you all so much for the advice. Can%26#39;t wait to get there!

Sorry, I can%26#39;t resist (lol);
