We had credit on Southwest Airlines to use for this trip, so had to fly to Long Island because they don%26#39;t start fying to LGA until our return home. Fortunately you can book one way with Southwest at no extra charge, so we are flying to Long Island and home from LGA. I was wondering what you think is the best transportation from Long Island to Manhattan. We are staying at the Eastgate Tower on E 39th st. We are a family of 4, so wasn%26#39;t sure if we should do the shuttle to train to Penn Station then to our hotel with all our luggage, or just get a limo. I know it%26#39;s around an hour ride either way, our flight arrives at 9:05am on a Thursday. This sight has been so helpful with all of our plans. Can%26#39;t wait to get there! We will be there June 25-30.
Long Island Airport to Manhattan1
What airport?
Long Island Airport to Manhattan1
A car from one of the car services would cost about $120+tip+toll (about $150)
The long island rail road is another option. Depending on the time and how you buy the tickets the one way adult fare is between $9.50 and $19.00
here is a link to fares: http://lirr42.mta.info/sfweb/faces/fare.jspx
You will need a taxi to the train station and another taxi from penn station to your hotel, add about $15-20 to the total cost.
I%26#39;m guessing Islip, but Poppa makes a good point, there are 3 airports on long island, I just happen to know about the Southwest thing.
There are 3 major and 2 smaller airports that serve New York City (4 major if you include Stewart International) so it really helps if you give us the name of the airport. Same is true for hotels, with about 400+ in the area saying the W hotel or the Hilton does not help much. If you know cross streets it really will get you much more info.
It really comes down to how much convenience is worth to you. Here%26#39;s a link with names of the various taxi/car service cos. They list prices but they may be out of date.

Compare that to cost of shuttle/train/taxi for 4. The age of the kids (assuming they are kids and not in-laws etc.) may reduce/affect the price of the shuttle and train. Figure a taxi from Penn station in NYC to your hotel will be ~ $7-10. After 9 am your train fare will be ';non peak';. The train runs 11 mins. after the hour so you%26#39;d prob. make the 10:11. The trip is 1 hr 20 mins. on the train.

Sorry, I forgot there are that many airports there. Yes, it is Islip(?). The 4 are myself, husband two girls, 15/17. We are staying at the Eastgate Tower on E 39th and I think right around 2nd Ave. Do you think we would need a taxi or something from Penn Station since we will have luggage?
Not a problem tweety,
Penn station is at 33rd street and 8th ave, eastgate tower on 39th street between 2nd and 3rd avenues (that%26#39;s how we locate things here) so, yes, IMHO you would need a taxi to do that, walking distance 1.25 miles (driving 1.5 miles - there are lots of one way streets here) Subway requires a transfer, and a bit of walking and up/down stairs - just cab it.
Thank you so much! How much do you think a taxi would be from Penn St. to the Eastgate? If it%26#39;s too much, we may just do the private car service from Islip by time we add up the shuttle, train and taxi.
Southwest is beginning/has begun service into LaGuardia. Much easier.
But with 4 people, I think a car would probably be easier from Islip.
Taxi from Penn to your hotel is, as NYWhiz said above, about $7-10
here is my attempt at the math (prices are total for 4)
Airport to Ronconcoma $20
LIRR to manhattan: $50-65
Taxi to your hotel from NY Penn: $10
Total cost $80-95
Car service including tip+ toll $150
A bunch of great memories from your trip to NYC: Priceless
At that time of the morning you will hit little traffic and can be at the midtown tunnel in about an hour.
If you choose the train, while cheaper, it will take longer. You will need a taxi to the station and then you will have to wait for a train. They only run once an hour, so if you just miss one, then you will be waiting. Then the train ride is about 90 minutes to Penn.
Flying into Islip isn%26#39;t that bad if you aren%26#39;t sitting on the LIE during rush hour. Sometimes it can take longer to get into the city from JFK during rush hour than driving from LI during non-peak times.
It is all about timing it right!
Have a great trip!!!!!
