Hamptons from NYC without a car?

Hi - I%26#39;m looking for a weekend getaway for my husband and I and was wondering if someone could suggest any towns/areas where we could take the train or bus in and manage to get around without a car. Or if there are any areas you don%26#39;t really need a car at all and can just rent bikes or something.

If you%26#39;re willing to use taxis a bit (to get to/from the train station) and select a place to stay carefully you can manage with bicycles in Southampton, Amagansett and Montauk. Shelter Island is also a possibility if you are willing to take a taxi to/from the ferry dock and aren%26#39;t looking for a lot of action. How were you planning on travelling from Boston?

hi nycwhiz - i actually live in nyc now. just moved a couple of years back and have yet to leave manhattan island - which is why i%26#39;m clueless of everything around.

do you know if east hampton is equally walkable?
