People who stay at the Chelsea hotel usually do so because of the history attached to this hotel. They don%26#39;t expect all the 4 star amenities and luxuries. They go to see the art in the public places, some rooms are still occupied by artists though less and less because they don%26#39;t rack in money, and to feel the history.
If you are looking for a comfortable room, you could instead try their guided tour of the hotel (it costs 40$) and stay at another hotel.

To enjoy the Chelsea, I think you%26#39;d have to understand the concept of %26#39;shabby-chic%26#39;. If you are fascinated by its eccentric history and are willing to do without some of the comforts of a more modern hotel, then it may be the place for you. But from what I%26#39;ve read on this forum (and the Paris and London ones) TA members who appreciate such things are probably in a minority.
thanks for the replies. sounds interesting and a bit offbeat. sounds as if it will be something COMPLETELY different to the radio city apartments we will be staying in on the first leg of the tour. a different experience would be good. Trying to get one room with a kitchenette and another double room for a family of four - hope to hear back from the hotel as their website doesn%26#39;t seem to give options on booking two different types of rooms in one reservation.
My friend used to live here. I think it would be a fun place if you%26#39;re into the history, and understand that it%26#39;s a pretty dumpy place by hotel standards. Definitely more interesting to younger people looking to have a good time than a family with kids.
my kids are 14 and 18, but of course you are correct that the Chelsea Hotel and its history means little to them. Hubbie on the other hand thinks he might find his muse there!
somehow, just looking for something a bit different to Radio City Apartments for the second leg - something a bit trendy, or quirky, or different to show a different side of NYC. (however, was also interested in a kitchenette!)
