I%26#39;m planning to spend a day in NYC very early this november. I know that skyscraper-gazing is the mark of tourists, but I love them so much I can%26#39;t help it!
Needless to say, I want lots of pics to bring home.
What%26#39;s the best way to get pics of my favorite skyscrapers without looking like a glaring tourist, getting stepped on, getting in anyone%26#39;s way or being annoying?
Photographing skyscrapersReally, I can only think of two things that really annoy me:
- Don%26#39;t stop in the middle of the sidewalk and stand there. Move to the side.
- Don%26#39;t walk too slow in the middle of the sidewalk, either. We%26#39;re on our lunch breaks and we have places to be. :)
Have a wonderful trip!
Photographing skyscrapersthe best pics of skyscrapers are taken from some distance. if you stand in front of the chrysler building and take a pic of it, you won%26#39;t be able to even tell what it is. i make this point because you can usually find a good vantage point that%26#39;s off the beaten path, where you will not bother anyone else or, even more important, they won%26#39;t bother you. as an example, my favorite pic of the chrysler building was taken on 43rd street, between 8th and 9th aves. the best pics of the sony building are from 6th avenue. if you keep this in mind, i think you will not only avoid getting bumped into a lot but you will also have better pics to remember your trip by.
Go to the Top of the Rock - you can get great skyscraper pictures there!!
My favorite view of the Chrysler Building is on Lex. as you walk down from 42nd street.
Assume you have digital camera. You may find that changing your pictures to B%26amp;W will give you some GREAT pictures.
To get the best photos of the NYC skyline, you have to leave Manhattan and head to Brooklyn or Queens. The best photos of lower Manhattan are from the waterfront Park in DUMBO or the Brooklyn Heights promenade. Similarly, the best views of Midtown are from the Queens side of the river or from Roosevelt island.
I%26#39;ll add that the old photographers%26#39; adage about shooting in the %26#39;golden hour%26#39; around dawn really pays off with NYC skyscrapers. You get great light and shadows with very few people on the street.
Another great view place: Jersey City (Exchange Place) or Hoboken, easily accessible via PATH trains.

Crans, great hint. I never knew that....
I agree with this - i got some stunning pictures at sunset.Even a novice like me with a pretty basic camera can get some good %26#39;uns from there!
