I want to thank everyone who lives in New York that posts on this board. It definitely made our trip better. Especially NYwhiz (happy birthday btw) who replied to every single post I made leading up to this; although all of the regulars were very helpful. We had a great time, New York is a wonderful place to visit and I%26#39;m at home feeling refreshed.
We got in last Wednesday at midnight and stayed at the Fairfield Times Square on 40th the first night. We used the Air Train from Newark and found it very easy to navigate. The next morning we switched hotels and went over to the Marriott Marquis, we really enjoyed that hotel. The only problems we found with the elevators was that some people didn%26#39;t follow the directions and get on their assigned elevator; so it was totally human error. For lunch on Thursday we went to Gordon Ramsay%26#39;s Maze, I had the best soup I have ever eaten there. Afterwards we went up to the Museum of Natural history and spent the afternoon there. What a wonderful museum! The dinosaur bones were spectacular. For dinner we went to Johns Pizza...it was outstanding. Friday we went to Morimoto%26#39;s for lunch, also great. I tried Sashimi for the first time and was really pleasantly surprised by it. Afterwards we got our hop on-hop off bus tickets which were really handy. The guides were good, we actually used them the entire weekend. Every guide had something different to add, and with the Times Square traffic closures we ended up with some different routes a few times. For dinner we went to the View at the Marquis, and I inadvertantly ordered chilled soup which was really hilarious. After the Gordon Ramsay soup I was cursed with cold blue soup hahaha. The food was fine, but we come from a town with HORRIBLE restaurants so our bar is set pretty low...it wasn%26#39;t the best meal of the trip by a long shot but I%26#39;m glad we went. On Saturday we went to Rockefeller Center and the top of the Rock, great view! The NBC store was a real highlight too and we found lots of stuff to bring back for friends and family. That night we went to Wicked which was also great. Sunday was our lazy day, we just wondered around The Village and Soho looking for the cheap Marc Jacobs store and went to the Shake Shack for dinner. By the way, we found we saw more of the city because one of my husbands co workers sent him on a quest for a cheap Mark Jacobs key chain, we searched all over the city for that thing and ended up seeing more than we would have otherwise...so having something odd to find is a great motivator to wander:) Monday was our last day and we went to the Tenament museum, Katz Deli (everyone should be required to do that!), and to Wall Street. My husband wasn%26#39;t such a fan of the museum, he likened it to visiting a condo he didn%26#39;t want to buy; I on the other hand LOVED it but I%26#39;m a history junkie.
We were going to go to ground zero to get the scale of it and pay our respects but changed our mind half way there...there were people there will pictures of the planes hitting (I thought they were selling them) and tons of people trying to make money off the steady stream of tourists and it seemed so disrespectful of what should be a very solemn place...then we got to the firehall and the firemen just looked so annoyed by it that we turned around. But we did get a real sense of how big it was just by seeing how many blocks were missing. It was something I really couldn%26#39;t grasp from seeing it on TV and it really was shocking.
A few other thoughts. We found most New Yorkers were very very nice. We even had some people at Katz point out that one of us should get into the drink line so we%26#39;d be done faster :) I was also impressed with how little air polution there was, we%26#39;ve been to LA many times and the contrast was amazing. We also found the fact you don%26#39;t have alley ways interesting, here we have back alleys where the dumpsters are and they are pretty much wasted space that attract druggies. I think the only thing that caught me off guard that I haven%26#39;t missed was the smell in Times Square, we got the occasional really good whiff of sewage lol. I really enjoyed the trip, it was nice because we enjoyed ourselves very much but at the same time I didn%26#39;t want to LIVE there...that may seem like a bad thing but there were aspects of New York that made me apreciate my home more. So I got a great break, saw things I%26#39;d never see here, got a first hand look at things I%26#39;ve seen and learned about for years, had a TON of fun, had some outstanding food, and am happy to be home..can there really be a better balance?
I'm back:)I enjoyed your trip report. The tip about Katz%26#39;s drink line will come in handy when we visit in July! I too love history, so I%26#39;m looking forward to visiting the Tenement Museum. BTW.... Did you ever find the key chain?
Thanks for writing!
I'm back:)Great trip report! Glad you enjoyed it. About *that* smell, we got a whiff of it a few times too. I lost count of the number of times my DH said, ';That is NOT a good smell.'; LOL But it was always gone a few steps later.
We did find the key chain...while we were looking it was getting irritating since it seemed like our entire trip we were looking for the key chain haha. Once we found it we realized we saw a lot more of the city than we would have otherwise, but dh%26#39;s co-worker is just going to hear the ';we spent the entire time looking for your keychain!'; version :P
On a funny note it was pretty funny wandering into the high end Marc Jacob store in Soho and asking, I%26#39;m plus sized and DH is just not the designer clothes type and they looked SOOO confused hahaha. They pointed us to the Bleeker store and were really helpful though.
Thanks for the trip report and describing your ';adventures';!
I will be in this grand city Monday 10:30AM!
Just wanted you to know I did read your report when you posted but forget to comment. Thanks for the b%26#39;day wishes and glad you had a great time. I think the smell you experienced was garBAGE not sewage. ;) So did you like the Fairfield?
