Time From JFK to a Show

Wanting peoples opinions on if i%26#39;m mad trying to make a show on the day I arrive in New York.

I arrive at JFK at 2.45pm and the show I want to see starts at 7pm

In that time I have to go through passport control, get luggage, get a taxi to just south of Central Park, check in at my hotel and then get to 15th Street

Is that doable? I%26#39;d need to leave myself a bit of leeway too in case my flight is late

I%26#39;m thinking this is a bit risky, what do you think?

Thanks

Time From JFK to a Show

It%26#39;s doable If you can get out of the airport like in a hour or so and your flight is on time.. I think you will be on the move but you should make it. I guess you like living on the edge a bit lol.

Time From JFK to a Show

I%26#39;m in two minds over it and want to see if people think I%26#39;m mad for even contemplating it. If things go well it could work like this

2.45pm - land

4.00pm - Leave airport in taxi

4.45pm - reach hotel and check in

5.00pm - leave hotel

5.30pm - arrive at theatre

Gives me an hour and a half leeway and I think none of those times are too unrealistic

If the plane arrives on time is another matter tho!!

Yes that%26#39;s the way I look at it also. Just hope for not too much traffic and plane lands on time. There is no other time to see this show or day? If not I guess take your chances.

  • JFK to Manhattan at night.

Hi. My family and I will visit NYC next July, our plane will land at terminal 8, at 10:30 PM. But my question is what is the best way to get at that hour to Manhattan? Is it safe to take public transport (Airtrain, subway) at that hour? or Is it better to take a taxi at the airport? In your experience how long do you think that take us go through migration and customs?

Thanks in advance for your advices.

    JFK to Manhattan at night.

There is no problem taking public transportation at night. My only concern is that if you are traveling with little ones, they will be exhausted and not do well on the transfers.

    JFK to Manhattan at night.

We%26#39;ve got a late arrival at JFK as well. We get in at 11pm. We%26#39;re flying in from elsewhere in the US so won%26#39;t have the hassle of going through customs.

Am I right in thinking that the cab will be a flat fare and with tip included will be $60? We%26#39;re going to East 58th Street.

I take it we%26#39;ll get a straight run in at that time of day? We arrive on a Monday.

    Thanks.

Yes, cab fare between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan is a flat charge of $45, plus tolls %26amp; tip, so your $60 estimate is fine.

At that time of the evening, you shouldn%26#39;t encounter much traffic congestion.

    Thanks.

    ***Cinemas close to Lexington Ave?***

    Hello,

We are staying at 569 Lexington Ave (Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel)and wondered if there are any decent cinemas close by such as an IMAX screen one? I won%26#39;t quite be 21 whilst there so at night we can%26#39;t exactly go out to a bar drinking etc so thought maybe one of the nights go see a movie as we are not into Broadway type shows.

    Thanks,

    ~Becka

redeeming actual CityPass booklet (replacing print-out)

For my visit to New York next week, I will buy CityPass online. I have the option to print an E-ticket 鈥?a printout confirming my purchase 鈥?which I will redeem at any of the participating CityPass attractions for an actual CityPass booklet as per website info.

I wonder if I will need to wait a long time (say more than 10 minutes) in line to get my printout with the booklet? Or can I redeem it in a snap?

You should be able to pick it up quickly without issue. Your wait times will come at the ESB!

    easyclicktravel.com?? Scam or just deals??

Hey can anyone tell me if they have used easyclicktravel.com before and whether anyone would trust them?? Found via Kayak.com and have good deals just not sure if safe??

Whats the cancelation policies on this and sites like them??

    Many thanks

    easyclicktravel.com?? Scam or just deals??

I%26#39;m also interested in the answer to this...they have some great hotel prices but would like to know they are a reputable site before using them for bookings.

    easyclicktravel.com?? Scam or just deals??

I hope someone who%26#39;s actually used them will reply. Until then,

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k2568927鈥?/a>

PS, when I did a web search for reviews of easyclick, I did find a few people saying they%26#39;d used them (for other locations besides NYC) with no problems. I think you just have to be careful about how the rate is described. Kayak features the lowest possible rate in the search. Then once you click through to it, often the rate for YOUR situation may be higher. (ie don%26#39;t book a government rate if you%26#39;re not entitled to it)

I booked a hotel in New York few weeks ago on easyclicktravel.com after I was redirected from Kayak.

There was no problem at all with my reservation.

On a later search there I saw that their prices are very reasonable (I was looking for NY and Chicago).

    Looks legit...

I%26#39;ve used EasyClickTravel in the past and I consider them 100% legit.

I used EazyClickTravel a couple of years ago when visiting Las Vegas.

It was one of their ';secret'; hotels where the name is not revealed until after you pay, but being Vegas it was very clear from the description which hotel it was. I got a rate about 30% cheaper than was available on any other on-line site.

I had no problems at all with the booking - I was even able to modify the dates of my trip slightly without any difficulty, and I%26#39;d have no reason not to use them again in the future.

I%26#39;m glad I found this topic because I have the same question. When you book is your credit card charged immediatly or is it just a hold/gaurantee?

    what is the cancellation policy?

Yeah good questions (the last two posts). Anyone know??

    Cheers

    Take care

I think asking others for cancellation policy is problematic. I have booked on sites where one hotel has one policy and another is different. Sometimes the cheapest prices have the least flexiblity. I would recommend looking carefully at each policy as you book.... and each time that you book.

This is much safer than relying on the anecdotal evidence of other TA users.

Great rate for Hampton Inn, Chelsea.

While researching hotel prices for my next NYC trip I came across what seems like a great rate for the Hampton Inn, Chelsea. For the dates of 13th Feb. 2010-18th Feb 2010 ebookers.com are quoting 拢392.50 for a 2 queen bedded room, by my calculations that works out at around $118 per night.

It%26#39;s no good for me because I need a suite but thought the info might be of some use for others planning a trip next year.

Worst new property EVER. Management is unfriendly and down right rude!!! If anyone ever picks up the phone you MIGHT get a chance to book a room but I wouldn%26#39;t count on it.... When you finally do get through the staff is oblivious. Sorry to say folks this place is NOT the place to be. I would suggest going with the more tried and true Yacht Club.

Go to the Ziegfeld on 54th between 6th and 7th - Not exactly an IMAX but an old fashion BIG screen theater that seats 1100 with a great sound system. Don%26#39;t worry - it%26#39;s usually pretty empty. They are currently showing the new Star Trek movie.

    Thank you :)

Fuerza Bruta - A Must See

Last night my wife and I went to the TKTS booth at the South Street Seaport and got tickets to Fuerza Bruta. We had never heard of it, but it sounded pretty interesting. It was absolutely amazing:

It was half Blue Man Group, half Cirque du Soleil, half anger management class, half The Matrix, half rave on meth, and half audience participation. Yes, I know that is too many halves, but it is a large show.

Much of the action takes place above you. Actors are running on treadmills, crashing through stuff, running on walls suspended by wires, or swimming in a transparent pool just inches above your head. The music is loud and funky. You are continually moved around by the crew. You will get wet. You may have something broken over your head. It is jaw dropping spectacular. In a word - WOW!

Recommended for: This is a great show for teens. It%26#39;s a great show for anyone who loves amazing visual and technical excitement. It%26#39;s a great show if you liked Blue Man or Cirque du Soliel

Not Recommended for: Hater of loud music. People with limited mobility. You will be called upon to stand and move for about an hour.

Fuerza Bruta - A Must See

Yes, I agree Fuerza Bruta is a must-see. We saw it in January and we also got our tickets at the South Street Seaport.

I enjoyed a glass of wine beforehand after a very long line with only one bartender.

It was also interesting to see people of all ages there, but I personally wouldn%26#39;t bring pre-teens of which I saw 3 or 4. In the above water part one of the women was wearing white and slithering above you - art yes, but I think somewhat inappropriate for such youngsters.

Fuerza Bruta - A Must See

I just bought discounted tickets for next week to Fuerza Bruta on Broadwaybox.com for $45 each!!

Can you rec a good spot for dinner before the show near the theater that might help us get in the right frame of mind? There are four of us...two teens (15 and 19) and their very young at heart parents.

    5 days and counting....

After reading your description of this show I couldn%26#39;t quite ';wrap my head around it'; so I did a ';Lotus'; and looked at the You Tube. :D After seeing the You Tube I%26#39;m still not sure how they choreograph all that action @ once. It must be quite a performance!

I was lucky enough to get a piece of styrofoam broken over my head! We loved it but you really are packed together tightly. I recommend leaving your handbag at home (mine was jammed into my side during the show), don%26#39;t bring anyone under 5 feet tall with you (a boy around the age of 10 had to have had trouble breathing being so squashed in), and don%26#39;t wear open toed shoes or sandals. If you don%26#39;t want to get soaking wet at the end of the show, be sure to move away from the middle of the room.

    It%26#39;s an incredible experience!

My wife and I had a great dinner at the Blue Water Grill right on Union Square. It was absolutely delicious. We had some of the best calmari we ever ate, a delicious lobster bisque, a delicious sushi roll and some other goodies. The desert was molten chocolate cake with amazing malted milk ice cream. MMMMM.

    Here%26#39;s their website:

    nymag.com/listings/鈥?/a>

It%26#39;s a nice place, not to stuffy, and good food to boot.

another +1 here for FB!!! it%26#39;s awesome, we saw it last month and loved it! We got our tix from the box office with a Broadway Box discount coupon so only $39 which was great. Also after the show drinks were 2 for 1 in the bar downstairs.

I%26#39;ve been reccomending it to everyone i see and i would see it again if i go back to NY.

Try to reservations at Union Square Cafe, get service and even better food. One of Danny Meyer%26#39;s places.

Union Square Cafe is indeed a great place to eat. It%26#39;s one of the best in the City. We went to Blue Water Grill because it was much less expensive. You will not be disappointed eating at either.

    BrooklynMel,

If you make another description of your dinner like that I swear I will eat my keyboard!

Fuerza Bruta has made its way to our schedule for our next trip.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

How long does the show last?

Only day I could do this is the day I arrive, and it would be quite tight if I could get there on time. Show is at 7pm that day and wondering when it finishes to know if I could eat afterwards rather than before to save time?

    Subway....art and architecture

I just had to share. I received a wonderful book for Mother%26#39;s Day, Subway Style, from the New York Transit Museum. It%26#39;s a historical journey through the stations highlighting the ceramic designs, metalwork, lighting, furnishings, signs, advertising, and the cars themselves. Fascinating stuff for anyone addicted to New York ;))

Oh, I would love that! I try to take pictures of the signs and mosaics because I think they are so neat looking. I%26#39;m sure the locals just roll their eyes at me when they see this!

    Thanks, Rassi.

I%26#39;d give my eye-teeth to see the old City Hall Station -- closed (except for the occasional tour) since 1945:

(Click on thumbnails for full-sized pics)

This year%26#39;s tour of the City Hall Station is Saturday, May 30 :-)

Ah, man! Wonder if I can convince my DH that we should take a trip again so soon.....

    My favorite piece of artwork is the zoetrope graffitti in the old abondoned Myrtle Avenue station between Dekalb and the Manhattan Bridge on the %26#39;Q%26#39; and %26#39;B%26#39; line in Brooklyn. The murals are spaced between the columns and as the train goes through the station it looks like the art work is moving. Here ..... take a look;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXyE_2fmshY

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUFFZOF-IrY

Those videos are so cool! We loved looking at the artwork in the subway when we visited.

When visitors take the subway, it pays to look around and enjoy the station. For example, W. 86th St. (#1 line) has tiles of drawings done by local school kids. W. 79 (#1) has beautiful raised tiles where walls meet ceilings. W. 59th St (Columbus Circle) has tiles of old sailing ships (Chris Columbus)

Astor Place Station (#6 line) is one of the original 28 subway stations and is on the List of Registered Historic Places in New York and has great ';beaver'; tiles in honor of John Jacob Astor.

    fodors.com/world/鈥eview-165474.html

BUT : Let%26#39;s say you want to read up or look at ALL the stations (click under each line) THIS SITE IS AMAZING:

Brooks, thanks for that great link to City Hall Station - it looks fabilous! Karen where did you get the information on when the next tour is - I%26#39;d love to have that for when I plan my next visit.

Those zoetrope videos also look cool - I could have swarn Marge Simpson appears towards the end!

    Hotels near Randall's Island Park?

    Thanks!

    Hotels near Randall's Island Park?

There are no hotels on Randall%26#39;s Island.

Your best bet is to put your dates into a hotel search engine and see what comes up in your budget. Finding something on the east side would be best.

    Hotels near Randall's Island Park?

Would it be easier to just take the train to NY?

    Yes it would be easier.

    Check travel zoo for specials

www.hopstop.com will help you with getting around with public transportaion.

I%26#39;d take the train: easier and a roundtrip, weekend ticket could be as low as $36 -- cheaper than gas, tolls and parking.

    www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer鈥?/a>

Use the Check Rates feature for the Pod Hotel and these places on Long Island City (in Queens, just on the other side of the East River) for availability %26amp; comparison pricing:

You might also consider using Priceline, if there are no more than 2 of you traveling together %26amp; if you don%26#39;t mind sharing a bed.

    Wonderful! Thank you so much!!

If you want to take the NY Water Taxi which is a fun and easy way to go, it stops at 35th st. %26amp; the East River and 90th st. %26amp; the East River.

    cirquedusoleil.com/en/鈥aps-infos.aspx

You can stay anywhere on the east side, but the Courtyard Upper East Side would be quite close to the 90th st. stop and might be inexpensive. Near the 35th st. stop, the Affinia Dumont and the Murray Hill East Suites would be relatively close. OR, just bid on Priceline if there are just 1 or 2 of you. I%26#39;d bid Empire state area or midtown east and you should be able to get something for ~$120/night. People have already won the Affinia Dumont for $95 (3.5* ESB), the Grand Hyatt for $105-120 and several others. (look on betterbidding.com)

Has anyone parked at N. White Plains RR Station?

alternitive parking at weschester county airport

I have...a few years ago. Most of the spaces are taken up by people with permits. There was very limited metered parking, so that may not work for long term parking.

I usuually suggest that people park at the main White Plains Train Station because they have a huge garage there and can handle long term. There is a service that takes people directly to Westchester County Airport from there (and back again, of course) that was developed due to the lack of parking at the Airport (not to mention the expense!) It%26#39;s called AIRLINK.

Here is a link to the Airlink Schedule. Don%26#39;t have info on fares, although I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re minimal. Also could look up parking fees for you at the WP Train Station if that helps, or you could contact them yourself. Let me know.

  • Building my ';proposal'; trip

    Hey Everyone,

I%26#39;ve been trolling on this site for a while now, and I%26#39;ve learned a lot. I appreciate all the help/suggestions I%26#39;ve already received.

I have this surprise trip to NYC in the works and I plan on proposing to my girlfriend. I am flying in to LGA at noon on July 3 for a 4-night stay.

This will be my fourth NYC trip and her first. We are both 25 years old.

So here%26#39;s what I%26#39;ve cemented so far:

I found a $190 rate at the Times Square Renaissance on easyclicktravel.com, then claimed that lower rate on Marriott.com.

Since Mariott.com guarantees lowest prices, they matched the easyclick rate plus took another 25% off, making my total daily rate just $142! So, as you can probably tell, I%26#39;m excited about that.

I got 1/2 price tickets on the front row of the mezzanine for Avenue Q for the first night, and also got two bleacher seats for the Yanks-Blue Jays for the 1:05 p.m. game on Monday, July 6 (our last full day there). I don%26#39;t really care about the game, but I just want to see the new digs for an hour or two - don%26#39;t want to use half a day there or anything.

As of now, I plan on dropping our stuff off at the hotel, then finding a quiet place in the park the afternoon we get there to propose, then going to a romantic early dinner.

But with no reservations yet, and show tickets already -- Avenue Q, very romantic, right! :) -- for the first night, those plans are fluid and could be moved to Saturday, the 4th of July afternoon.

So, thanks to you guys, I%26#39;ve started putting an ';eats'; list together for places to go throughout the trip. But I%26#39;m also trying to decide on ';The dinner'; after I propose, whether it be Fri or Sat.

I%26#39;ve looked through old threads, seeing that the River Cafe and OIBL look to be the most popular. But my GF isn%26#39;t the most exotic eater in the world (We will go somewhere nice and she want a Caesar Salad, normally)

Now that I%26#39;ve bored you into submission, here%26#39;s what I need:

    - The most romantic dinner I can find for a picky, non- prix-fixe type of eater.

    - Smart ways to use our time when it comes to sightseeing (one area per day?, double-decker bus, etc.?)

-Any suggestions on what could make this trip as memorable as possible.

    - Some extra money to pay for the ring :)

Thanks everyone in advance for their help.

    -STP

    Building my ';proposal'; trip

Sorry, I don%26#39;t really have any advice or extra money for that matter! LOL Just wanted to say, what a lucky girl and wish you good luck! :)

    Building my ';proposal'; trip

I%26#39;ve read good things on this forum about the Phototrek tour. You could get some great ';engagement'; photos of you and your fiance with NYC in the background.

I don%26#39;t have any ideas either but just want to say that I hope it all goes well and she is a very, very lucky girl. Maybe I should drop hints to my OH about NY? Haha.

I proposed in NYC in 2005 at the Top Of The Rock. We ate at Del Friscos afterwards. They took very good care of us with a call from me in advance. Let the restaurant know the occasion and they will make it special.

The only down side is now I have a wife. Way to work it out!

Just kidding. Could not be happier!

    Hi Stan,

How funny, I am planning on doing the same on July 18th! - we are both 25yrs old also

I%26#39;ve booked up 4 nights in the New York Palace (already e-mailed them to tell them my plan, hopefully get a room upgrade!)

As of excursions and %26#39;popping the question%26#39; I haven%26#39;t decided myself yet....

Stan - Have you done a search? Believe it or not this forum has done quite a bit on places to propose.

Based on some other trip reports with proposals in them, I think you might want to propose earlier than later.

Also, be sure to check back and let us know how it went.

    Good luck with everything.

After you propose in the Park, take a ride down to City Hall and Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. Take her to the River Cafe. Great food and the most amazing views of New York. It%26#39;s a special place for this special nite: http://www.rivercafe.com/

For sightseeing, divide the City into neighborhoods. I would do a day of Lower Manhattan including the Staten Island Ferry, Century 21, Broadway walk, Wall Street, and City Hall. Continue past City Hall and make a right turn down Worth Street into Chinatown for lunch.

Spend a day wandering around Greenwich Village [East and West] and Soho.

Spend a day at Midtown and museum or store hopping.

    Good luck.

Does Hopstop charge me if I register my iPhone and use it?

Hello. Sorry for posting this here, but I can%26#39;t figure out how to e-mail a question to the Hopstop people. If I register my iphone and use the PDA service, do they charge me somehow or is it free? Are there any other iPhone Apps or websites that anyone would care to recommend for visitors to New York?

Does Hopstop charge me if I register my iPhone and use it?

No, Hopstop is a free service.

Urbanspoon is fun; it gives you restaurant recommendations by shaking your phone.

Does Hopstop charge me if I register my iPhone and use it?

You don%26#39;t have the G3 with GPS, I assume? As for the PDA, I believe it%26#39;s just your normal messaging charges.

You could also try the CityTransit or MetroMagnet apps.

    More iPhone apps for NYC:

    Urban Spoon (restaurant finder):

    urbanspoon.com/blog/27/Urbanspoon-on-the-iPh鈥?/a>

    NY on Tap (bar finder):

    http://www.newyorkontap.com/mobileDemo.aspx

How do I access Hopstop on my iPhone? Is it an App that is created just for iPhone that I download. Or do I open Safari and navigate to www.hoptstop.com/pda? It seems that Apps created for iPhone are easier to use.

here is another good food web site, for Brooklyn and Queens. www.Mealny.com

That New York on tap is quite possibly the finest thing I%26#39;ve ever seen!

Is the full scale map with all the bars an app or just a website? Either way, my iPhone will access it.

The Hopstop Iphone App only receives 2 stars with nearly 1,000 reviews..many of which from New Yorkers saying it doesn%26#39;t find basic addresses and that you may as well just use the regular website in the browser instead.

Otherwise there is a whole travel section in the App store, covering everything from tracking flights, to packing lists, and the trip advisor restaurant locator.

    one day in Buffalo

Will be in Buffalo on business this week. I am arriving a day early and am planning on seeing the falls. How long will this take? I%26#39;m assuming it won%26#39;t take an entire day. What else do you suggest to do/see with the remainder of my day?

    one day in Buffalo

I would suggest you repost this in the New York section, not where you did, which is the New York City forum. Buffalo is in NY state, not NY city...

    one day in Buffalo

Sorry now I feel like an idiot - I was the one in the wrong forum. I was not impressed with the casino or the casino buffet at the Falls, but the Beef on Weck in Buffalo is something worth tracking down:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kummelweck

    Sorry again!

You shouldn%26#39;t feel like an idiot. Your original message WAS posted on the Buffalo forum.

The confusion occurred because when someone posts a message on any city-specific board (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, New York City), it also appears on the general board for the entire state. So if someone reads the general New York State forum, where MOST of the posts are about New York City, on first glance it might look as if your Buffalo post was out of place -- but it wasn%26#39;t.

Also, I can%26#39;t tell from your follow-up message -- did you arrive in Buffalo already? Do you still need information about the Falls?

What day will you be in Buffalo? We might be able to suggest specific events you could attend. There are FREE tours of Buffalo City Hall on business days from 12:00-1:00, meet in the lobby. If you can%26#39;t make the tour, you can take yourself up to the observation deck during business hours (requires walking up several floors from the 25th floor). On a clear day you can see the mist from Niagara Falls.

In any case, if it%26#39;s a nice day/evening, I recommend a long walk up %26amp; down Elmwood Ave, also known as the Elmwood Strip or the Elmwood Village in Buffalo. I would start at Bidwell Pkwy and head south toward downtown Buffalo. There are locally owned shops and restaurants on Elmwood, and good people watching. If you see a residential side street that looks good, turn down it (particularly to the east of Elmwood, there are GREAT houses to see like on West Ferry, Lexington, or Highland.)

Or, if you prefer a walk in the park, you can walk around the lake at Delaware Park, and up Lincoln Pkwy to Soldiers Circle. I%26#39;m assuming you%26#39;ll have a map of Buffalo!

Sorry I have not responded to your any of your replies sooner. I thought I had clicked the option to notify me if anyone responded to my original post, but I was never notified any responses. I just thought no one had answered my question, and I haven%26#39;t had time to re-check the board.

Anyway, will be arriving in Buffalo late this afternoon (Wednesday). I will have this evening and most of the day Thursday to see the sights. Thanks for all your help.

Not sure if you%26#39;ll still be here (or if you%26#39;ll get this message!) but Thursday night offers a big, free rock concert at Lafayette Square downtown. It%26#39;s on Main Street and Court Street, with City Hall in the distance. Starts at 5:00pm.

  • Is this place legit?

The prices during low season seem too good to be true, but it%26#39;s listed on bedandbreakfast.com. You would think they would check it out before listing it on their site.

    http://www.nyc-bnb.com/index.htm

The rooms at South Street Seaport say they are over or near the Tiffany%26#39;s building. According to the Tiffany site, the new store will be on Wall Street. What gives?

    Is this place legit?

Cathy, those apartments look really good. Are those prices so out of whack with other apartments in the city?

That Tiffany%26#39;s reference does seem very odd as the new store is 37 Wall Street which is hardly South Street Seaport!

    Is this place legit?

I can%26#39;t tell, Nic, which is why I%26#39;m asking. It seems too good to be true to get an apartment of that quality for less than $250. I solicited some quotes from one of the recommended sites and found that a 1 bedroom with a sofa bed was around $200. Those were pretty dingy looking and didn%26#39;t have the touches of these like wood floors, granite counters, and stainless appliances. 2 bedrooms got into the range of $300 and still didn%26#39;t look that much better.

I%26#39;m hoping it%26#39;s legit because it would be a great deal. As much as I loved the UWS, it would be worth it for these places.

The south street seaport is about 5 min walk from the new tiffany store on wall street, so thats pretty close.

If they take Credit Cards (directly, not thru a third party) the are most likely a real business. If they are listed with the Better Busines Bureau they are ligit, but not being listed means either they are not a member and have not had any complaints sent to the BBB, or they do not exist,. there is no way to check which it is

Low season in NYC is jan and feb, rates just under $200 are not out of the question, even lower some places.

    Al, what they actually say is: ';This one-bedroom apartment is in one of the South Street Seaport Area鈥檚 most desirable and beautiful buildings. A century-old jewel, it has just been magically transformed into a modern luxury residence -- with Tiffany%26#39;s opening on the retail level.';

That makes it sound to me that the apartment is above Tiffany.

I%26#39;m always suspicious of websites with no address and no contact info except an email address and/or a cell phone number. That%26#39;s what this website has. It does have a link to another website with a Brooklyn address. It may be perfectly legit, but given all the scams going on, I%26#39;d tread carefully.

I walk by that building every day (at least where the Tiffany%26#39;s is opening. It%26#39;s between the subway and my office. While it%26#39;s definitely not in South Street Seaport, it isn%26#39;t far.

Honestly, that building does not strike me as one where you would get a lot of people renting out their apartments, especially for cheap. The building is on Wall Street, a half a block from the NYSE and Federal Hall, I would think someone who lives there would mention those as attractions and not what is really a mall a 5 - 10 minute walk away.

    Caveat Emptor.

I called this morning. The rates for next year are going up substantially from what they are listed on the site. Low season is currently listed as running $175.00-$285.00. She says that will be $300-$480 next year.

The Tiffany place is next door to the new Tiffany store according to her. She at least knew that Tiffany has not opened the store yet.

They require a 50% deposit which ';of course'; can be charged on a credit card. She said they accept bedandbreakfast.com gift certificates, so I%26#39;ll contact that company to get more information. All the surveys on the bedandbreakfast.com site are clearly from the owners and I can%26#39;t find this place on TA.

Thanks for the comments on this. I%26#39;ll enjoy the challenge of figuring it out!

I believe anything pretty much listed on Bedandbreakfast.com is Legit. Reason why. They sell B%26amp;B gift cards in retail stores. So I would assume anyone listed on there should be kosher. But you never know.

Check and check again with this apartment I thought I had a lovely apartment and thanks to trip advisor members I was saved from being scamed, plus I set up with a few friends for all us to email for the same dates and they took details for bookings for all the dates and said the apartment was available. This apartment was on a ligit site and after all the comments I made it has now been taken of the site, so please be careful

I hadn%26#39;t thought of doing that, Willow. That%26#39;s a great idea. I';ve also emailed bedandbreakfast.com asking if they can confirm it%26#39;s legit.

    I need more...Where to start?!

Well, other than Trip Advisor, of course.

I%26#39;m planning a Ladies Trip to NYC in November/December for my Mom%26#39;s 60th birthday. There will be about 5-6 of us. None of us have been to NYC before.

Where is a good place to research what shows are playing, things to do, etc.

There are some great tips on here obviously, but I%26#39;m hoping for more info where I can punch in some dates, and some options will ';magically'; appear.

    Thanks!

    I need more...Where to start?!

Welcome to the forum. You%26#39;ll have a great time!

At the top of this forum is a FAQ ';sticky'; which includes threads and links on the most popular questions, including ';must see'; sights, how to use the subway, crime myths, how to buy discount B%26#39;way show tix, etc.

There%26#39;s also a thread called ';helpful websites'; that lists websites for events, food, etc.

At the bottom of the FAQ are collections of trip reports, including those by adult family members. Most were first-timers.

Just to name a few of my faves from the FAQ, I like:

    www.newyorkled.com

    www.newyorkology.com

    www.mustseenewyork.com

You can also find good 1, 2, 3 day and 7 day sample itineraries on fodors.com and fromemrs.com (or in traditional book form.)

    Cheap Hotels/Motels near Lake George?

First-timer. Looking to stay for 2 days, but on a budget.

Don%26#39;t have a car, so I%26#39;d like to stay where the action is. I%26#39;ve no problems stayng within walking distance to the lake.

Getting there via Amtrak/bus but can%26#39;t spend much. I%26#39;d say in the $100-300 range.

Looking on Priceline %26amp; Hotwire, as well as the hotel/motel websites and can%26#39;t see anything that I%26#39;d put actual head-to-pillow LOL! Some of these places look grimy, folks.

    Suggestions, tips, all welcomed.

    Cheap Hotels/Motels near Lake George?

Without a car you are really quite limited. Unlike NYC area - upstate is more geared to having a car. There are some name brand hotels in Lake George Village area but the ones in the heart of it all are smaller private places. Have you tried Fort William Henry Resort and Conference Center? Not sure of the pricing but it is close to everything. Since I have not stayed in a hotel on the strip in the village in nearly 20 years I can only speak to the outside grounds not where your head hits the pillow....sorry.

    Cheap Hotels/Motels near Lake George?

Fort William Henry%26#39;s motel side of the center is the cheaper part. The main hotel is very expensive. This is the best location. Across the street from this hotel is the Quality Inn which is reasonable also. It%26#39;s across the street from the lake. Nice rooms, great pool and free contintental breakfast. You can walk to everything from both of these hotels. These are the only ones I have stayed on the strip. On the other end of the strip is an Econo Lodge which is still in walking distance. Check that one out too.

  • Food Suggestions for Family of 4 (Kids 7 and 5)

Heading to NY this weekend for the 1st time with the kids. Arriving Saturday lunchtime and leaving Monday at lunchtime.

Looking for recommendations for lunch and dinner. We are staying at 57th and 6th. Would like to take the kids for some authentic NY style pizza, ideally located near the hotel.

Also thinking about the Burger Joint in our hotel.

Other than that we are wide open for suggestions.

Food Suggestions for Family of 4 (Kids 7 and 5)

The closest of the famous pizza places to your hotel is John%26#39;s, which is in Times Square:

    http://www.johnspizzerianyc.com/index2.htm

They might also like Ellen%26#39;s Stardust Diner, which has a singing waitstaff. The food is a snooze, but that%26#39;s not really the point:

    http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/

Food Suggestions for Family of 4 (Kids 7 and 5)

Tell us where you%26#39;re planning on going, and we can make recos nearby.

E.g. if you%26#39;re going to the American Museum of Natural History, I always reco Big Nick%26#39;s Burgers, on B%26#39;way and 77th Street. Cramped and kitschy, it%26#39;s a great value, open 24-7!

    http://bignicksnyc.com/

If they like Chinese Food, there are numerous restaurants in Chinatown that would be great. For dessert, head to the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for some really cool flavors:

    http://www.chinatownicecreamfactory.com/

If your kids are into some adventure, take them to Coney Island where they can ride the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone. Afterwards, they can get hot dogs at Nathan%26#39;s Famous.

    http://www.coneyisland.com/

Most restaurants in NYC are kid friendly, so you shouldn%26#39;t have any worries.

I second the Ellen%26#39;s Stardust recommendation. That will keep the kids entertained while they eat and you%26#39;ll enjoy it too.

If you are in the Greenwich Village area, the kids might like

Peanut Butter and Company (menu is all varieties of peanut butter sandwiches. ) Fun!

    www.ilovepeanutbutter.com/sandwichshop.html

For dinner, if you want a midrange price that the kids might like, check out Basta Pasta. It is a branch of a Tokyo restaurant featuring very good Italian food (although the staff is Japanese. But the piece de resistance is the parmesan pasta, where they bring to the table a huge huge 1/2 wheel of parmesan and put the warm pasta in it and stir it up. A low-key show, and kids love it. I have also seen some celebs there. You do need a reservation and well-behaved kids, but if you%26#39;re up for something ';nice'; this is an idea. My daughter, now 16, loved it since she was 6.

    http://www.bastapastanyc.com/

Since we are staying near Central Park and would like to spend some time exploring the Park someone suggested to me Tavern on the Green for dinner or the Boathouse?

    Any opinions on these options?

Also been reading up on pizza places and seems like the best option close to the hotel is John%26#39;s on 44th although things I have read indicate that the location on Bleeker Street is much better. Any opinions.

Thanks for the input - all very helpful.

I agree w/ Crans on her restaurant recommendatons...STARDUST DINER %26amp; JOHNS PIZZARIA! We went to Stardust diner after we saw Wicked one night for some dessert %26amp; late night appetizers. Food is so-so but the entertainment was fun. Johns Pizza was the first place we ate when we got there and it was soooo yummy %26amp; friendly staff too. Both were great for my girls 9 %26amp; 12 years old when we went to the city last summer. And we did some little deli joints off the beaten track which were just good enough for my girls too!!

I%26#39;d love to hear where you went - we are going with our kids (8,6, and 3) this weekend and also want good food but where they are at least somewhat entertained so we can enjoy our meals. Staying in the same area as well. Thanks!

Please don%26#39;t go to to TOTG!!! It%26#39;s overpriced and not very good. It%26#39;s going to be ';reincarnated'; soon under new management (I admit I haven%26#39;t kept track of the latest...), but for now, just go and take a photo.

Try typing ';Tavern on the Green'; in the forum search box to read more.

The Boathouse is ok, but pricey. Instead, get burgers and fries at the Boathouse Snack Bar in the back. Walk around the lake and cop a seat on the grass, rock or in a gazebo. Cheaper and just as good.

Say, if you have the time, I highly reco renting a rowboat fof the kids. It%26#39;s awesome! You might see some turtles, frogs and herons.

  • Fireworks 2009: in the Hudson opposite midtown

For anyone starting to make plans (including hotel or dinner reservations) for the Macy%26#39;s fireworks show on the Fourth of July, be aware that the current plans call for placing all the barges in the Hudson River between approximately (the exact locations are still being tweaked) 34th Street and 46th Street. There will be no fireworks in the East River, nor (at least as presently planned) will there be fireworks dowtown by the Statue of Liberty and the Battery.

Fireworks 2009: in the Hudson opposite midtown

Yeah! I know this will anger AlicePalace, though.

I bet they%26#39;re scaling it down to save money.... It has to cost the city millions to shut down the FDR drive and put all those baricades up, aside from everything else.

Fireworks 2009: in the Hudson opposite midtown

Great info, thanks for letting us know.

No anger here, and I do thank GWB for the update.

Still, this sounds like a horrible idea. 34th to 46th on the west side? Better hope it%26#39;s not hot, stormy, or involves a free Diana Ross concert.

If they don%26#39;t want to shut down the FDR, I don%26#39;t imagine they%26#39;ll want to shut down the West Side Highway either. So where are they going to put everyone?

I suppose they could paddle Diana Ross up and down the river in a kayak so everyone gets a glimpse.

    Greenwhiteblue-

Thanks so much for the info. WE have been asking other posters about the fireworks and someone did mention that they heard the fireworks would be held on the Hudson side. With that said, we are coming into town on the 4th and were hoping to see the fireworks from the Millenium UN Hotel since they had views of the East River. Now that it will be on the Hudson River, where would one be able to view them? are there any hotels that have a view of the Hudson? We did nto want to have to ';stake out'; a spot hours before the fireworks began.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S Interesting pen name. you did not get that from the Hair Musical did you? They have an irreverent song about the US flag where they intentionally scramble (and sometimes add) colors represented on the US flag

    Dizzy:

I know you don%26#39;t want to hear this but if you have a

real interest in the fireworks I would start looking

at a cruise for that night. With that location the

only place you will be able to see them will be the

West side Highway if they close it off. If they do

have them near the Statue but on the west side the

viewing area is so small it would be a madhouse.

You might try one of the riverside hotels in New

Jersey but my original recommendation of Roosevelt

Island is clearly out as is the hotel you were going

    to stay at.

My wife works in the area on the west side and the

only year we went to her work place when they had a

similar plan it rained and we ended up watching them

from indoors and it was bad. Sorry

For fireworks on the Hudson, you will find the same sort of thing as fireworks on the East River: the shorefront road (in this case, 12th Avenue) will be closed and turned into a vantage point for people on foot. Actually, it will be a little easier to manage, as there are many more access points, as opposed to the limited-access FDR. In addition, you don%26#39;t have the headache of people stopping their cars on the BQE to wach fireworks, and thereby stopping traffic (and I will say nothing of people pulling the emergency cords on trains going over the East River Bridges...) I think that you will have a good view from river-facing rooms in the New Yorker; the problem, of course, is that it is the New Yorker...

thanks GBW and Bilman for the info-

Bilman- I did look at some of the cruise links another poster had sent me and they ranged from $80 pp for a box dinner and coupon for 2 drinks and one went as high as $377/pp for food and drink and jazz music. Once again we would have to get there by 6 to get on the cruise and we are going to see the Hair musical at 2 pm that day. I did not want to feel rushed. FYI, our real intention for going to NYC was to see the show and we thought an added bonus would be to see the fireworks.

Last question for both of you, my dad says there is a restaurant at the top of Rockefeller Center, he thought we might be able to see fireworks from there? I know the Millenium Hotel in Times Square (or is it the Marriott Marquis) has (or had) a revolving restaurant, maybe that is an option too. If not, not a problem. we%26#39;ll enjoy the weekend nonetheless.

Thanks for the info and advice

That restaurant was the Rainbow Room and it recently

closed but again watching the fireworks from inside

a building is really a bad idea. I did it once and I

was close to the action but unless you are outdoors it

is likely you would not get the whole effect. GWB

seems to think that the West Side HGWY will be closed

and he is absolutely right about more access. I just don%26#39;t think being inside will give you the experience

you are looking for. This change in venue has thrown

a curve to all of us. Keep watching for GWB%26#39;s posts

on this he seems to be ahead of the curve and is

    probably the best source.

sorry if im totally wrong with my directions here ...

I was looking at taking a circle line cruise on this day which departs from pier 83 on the west side, is this be the area where the fireworks would be taking place?

If so would it be hard getting your way to the cruise with the large crowd attending the fireworks (you board for the cruise at 4.30)

New York Yankees - Legends Suite Tickets worth the Hype?

Has anyone had the pleasure of sitting in the legends suite sections of the New Yankee Stadium?

Is it worth all of the hype?

New York Yankees - Legends Suite Tickets worth the Hype?

I%26#39;m not sure what ';hype'; you%26#39;re talking about. They%26#39;ve been the figure of extensive ridicule.

New York Yankees - Legends Suite Tickets worth the Hype?

Let me rephrase then. Does the experience offset the sticker shock of the ticket price?

I%26#39;m as big a baseball fan as you will find. I have attended hundreds of games at Yankee Stadium. These prices are ludicrous. If anyone wants to fork over two grand for tickets, they should get their head examined.

My suggestion to those who would shell out this kind of money is to get cheaper seats, and donate the rest to a little league of your choice. They could certainly use the money more than the Steinbrenners.

The tour ends near bowling green, so we may then hit Trinity Church and Lunch at Katz

Rock of Ages 8pm (maybe?) I would hope to snag some cheap tickets at the TKTS that day? I am not sure about which location would be best and if you can ';pick'; your seats at all.. I need to research this more.

Also Saturday, we check out and head back to LGA to pick up a car rental. We are off to the Catskills for a wedding. Would there happen to be a White Castle on the drive that way? I checked their website, but that didn%26#39;t help me much.

Any adjustments or thoughts on it are greatly appreciated.

We are trying to keep it on the cheap, so we are choosing only to do TOTR, AMONH and Rock of Ages.

A better attempt at our 1st timer Itinerary

I would try to avoid saying want to be at Katz by 3:00 etc..., you%26#39;ll never stay on time and shouldn%26#39;t be more bothered about crossing things off lists, and getting from point to point, more about the points.

Anyways... GCT has a lovely food court where you can get some food, aswell as some restaurants too -- I really love the food court specially the Chinese and Mexican place.

After GCT you can walk across W and hit the NYPL and Bryant Park, then to Times Square.

On Wednesday I think you trying to fit way too much in, 1st thing Coney Island takes a least an hour to get there by subway you won%26#39;t be able just to go down for a quick look -- too time consuming, it really needs about 1/2 a day.

I think you might have to cut some things out otherwise you%26#39;ll be rushing around too much, start with the SI Ferry, the walk up the Wall St area to the WTC site, and go to St Pauls Chapel.

Then I would say subway over to Brooklyn Heights, pizza from Grimaldi%26#39;s (one of the best pizza%26#39; in NYC including long lines). Then walk over the bridge.

And if you have time you could hit Greenwich Village, not sure if could fit it in -- I think you%26#39;ll have to choose from the village or Brooklyn.

There%26#39;s no need to head to the Rockefeller Centre, when going back later for ToTR, I would also avoid eating at Rockefeller Centre and maybe try somewhere more local.

I don%26#39;t know anything about Jimmy so can%26#39;t help there

Wed start at the south east corner of Central Park, you can hit FAO before you enter the park, then you can wonder through CP until you get to the AMONH and then have lunch at Gray%26#39;s and continue back through CP.

Recco%26#39;s for Chinese either Amazing 66 or New Green Bo both in Chinatown

Friday, if you want to do the Fed Tour, I would book now, just go on the website and you can book tickets there.

    Happy Planning :)

A better attempt at our 1st timer Itinerary

Wednesday may not be impossible, but it does appear to be a mad rush. First, you have to eliminate heading to the Village for a snack. You don%26#39;t want to go from Downtown, to the Village, and back to Downtown.

Take the ferry and upon entering back into Manhattan, walk up Broadway to the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. You will pass the Old Customs House, Bowling Green, the Charging Bull and St. Pauls Chapel [9/11 memorial site]. After crossing beautiful City Hall Park, you are at the Bridge entrance. At the end of the Bridge, head down the ramp - not the stairs. At the end of the ramp head to the water. When you get to Henry Street, make a right and head to the 2/3 train on Clark Street. Take the 2/3 into Brooklyn and transfer for the Q train at Atlantic/Pacific St. Take the Q to the end of the line and you are at Coney Island.

At Coney Island you can ride the Cyclone and Wonderwheel, eat a hotdog at Nathans or take a dip in the ocean. I would walk down the Boardwalk for about 15 minutes to visit Brighton Beach, a large Russian neighborhood, before heading back into the city via the B train.

Thanks for both replies. I guess I went from too few things to way too many. I will discuss coney island with my husband again, he really just wants to see it because of his dad...but maybe it%26#39;s too much to fit in. We want to fit a lot in, but remain sane as well.

I will try and move things around a bit. I really do appreciate the help.

    Thanks

Ok I have adjusted our schedule a bit. I also managed to get tickets for the federal reserve tour, but checking several times a day. I also found that the Museum Mile even is happening the day we arrive, so that sounds like a fun/free introduction to the city.

    Tuesday June 9

    Arrive 3:25 LGA

Hotel Fitzpatrick 4:30? via the bus/subway option (we will be brave)

    Museum Mile Event 6-9pm

Dinner (Grand Central or near the museums)?

Anything else recommended on the way back to the hotel. We do need to grab some water, bagels and cream cheese for the hotel room.

    Back to Hotel

    Wed June 10

Financial District: Wall Street, Trinity Church, WTC? and ..

    Federal Reserve Tour 9:30

    Chinatown

    Katz Deli (lunch)

    Staten Island Ferry

    Head back towards Rockefeller 3:00

Explore Rockefeller area if we have time… (like St. Patricks)

Jimmy Fallon Tickets: Arrive by 4:15

    Jimmy Fallon: 5:30-6:30?

Dinner at Ted’s Montana Burger (have free burger coupons)

TOTR 8:00-9:00 (should see daylight and night lights?)

Explore more Rockefeller Center, if still open?

    Thurs June 11

    Then Central Park %26amp; AMONH

We plan on doing spending the morning at one and afternoon at the other. I am not sure if the museum would be better earlier or later?

    Lunch at Gray%26#39;s Papayas?

Dinner... Chinese maybe somewhere cheap :-)

Possibly have John Stewart Tickets, otherwise?

Explore Grand Central, walk towards Bryant park, library and times square?

    Friday

Morning is open: Maybe Greenwich Village/Washington Square or other “area” we haven’t seen yet.

    Brooklyn Bridge

    Pizza in Brooklyn

Afternoon open… Maybe attempt Coney Island? Nathans Hotdog?

Rock of Ages 8pm. I have been getting the TKTS email for the non-Times Square locations, and they seem to have Rock of Ages tix most days. I am not sure about which TKTS location would be best and if you can ';pick'; your seats at all. The current code at BroadwayBox is only through June 4.

    Saturday

Is there a White Castle anywhere between LGA or on the way towards the Catskills?

Any adjustments or thoughts on it are greatly appreciated.

Ruths Chris Steakhouse or The capitol grill in NYC?

    HI all,

I am coming to New York City for my 4oth on June 6th for 2 days. We are going to get AMEX reward gift certificates for dinner one night.

Does anyone have an opinion on weather we should go to Ruths Chris Steakhouse or The Capitol Grill? Of course there are no prices on line so we assume they are both expensive. I would love some feed back on one over the other and also how much $$ do you think we would need for 3 for dinner?

Thanks so much!! Can%26#39;t wait for my trip!!

Ruths Chris Steakhouse or The capitol grill in NYC?

OH for god%26#39;s sake, neither! The Capital Grille is from ALTANTA for god%26#39;s sake. And while I believe Ruth Chris%26#39; is from Chicago, it is a chain. Why not take you AMEX gift card to a more genuine NYC location??????? MY god, you can probably get Captial Grille in Cooncord! There are plenty of NYC based steakhouses - and other types of restaurants - where you can use the AMEX gift card to bettter use!!

    Ask if you%26#39;re interested - I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get a 1000 ideas!

I am a Delfriscos person , but I would choose The Capitol Grill out of these choices. I would think at least $150 for 3 people.

    http://www.delfriscos.com/

Here is another steak house to try if you change your mind.

    http://www.peterluger.com/

Thank you so much for the info, this was very helpful!

I agree - no need to go to a national chain steakhouse in NYC.

Have you tried typing ';best steak'; or ';steakhouse'; in the forum search box?

Personally, my faves are BLT Steak, Peter Luger%26#39;s and Wolfgang%26#39;s. You%26#39;ll also see Keen%26#39;s, Strip House, STK, Smith and Wollensky%26#39;s, Old Homestead, Del Frisco, craftsteak and others mentioned a lot.

You can type those names in the search box, too, or read reviews here:

www.menupages.com (you can select cuisine and rank by rating or price.)

    www.yelp.com/nyc

    www.urbanspoon.com

    www.savorycities.com

Personally, I have been to the Capital Grille a few times and have not been overwhelmed by the food for the money. I also can%26#39;t recommend the Michael Jordan Steakhouse in Grand Central as I think that%26#39;s worse then Capital. I like the Bull and Bear steakhouse for fabulous filet mignon. Salads and appetizers are around $10-$20 per person, entrees are $33-$50 per person, you%26#39;ll want to share some side dishes ($10 per side) plus dessert.

To see the whole menu, go to:

    www.menupages.com

For a truly awesome steak dining experience, I also highly recommend the Churrascaria Plataforma restaurant. I believe it is $55 per person for dinner. It is all you can eat rodizio brazilian churrascaria. Unbelievable ';salad'; bar (seafood, salads, etc etc), plus unbelievable steaks, fish, and meat, and great flambe bananas. This is not a typical buffet. It is high class, people come dressed up and the decor is very elegant.

However, I will say that there are plenty of places in the City where you can get a great steak for way less then the above places but if you are looking to splurge, this is what I would do.

I have to disagree with that last recommendation - I hate Churrascaria Plataforma for a steak. It鈥檚 just not a proper steak house. They serve everything well-done and carve it at your table - I just can鈥檛 eat a steak that way so for me it鈥檚 a total waste. I also never found it 鈥榟igh class鈥?鈥?it鈥檚 just a bunch of bankers that have come directly from work and happen to still be wearing their suits (that鈥檚 just the norm in any of these places on a weeknight). I would describe the place as noisy and festive. If you鈥檙e planning a bachelor party, or have a large group this might be a good place for you. But it鈥檚 not even in the same category as the favorites QueensBlvd threw out there.

oh yes, it is a very different atmosphere from say bull and bear. it is much livelier. To each his own.

  • Our Vacation to NYC (from April 30th - May 4th), a journal!

    Hi everyone!

We visited NYC from April 30th - May 4th and I kept a journal each day while we were there. I%26#39;ve started to post the journal on my travel blog and it would be awesome if you wanted to read about our trip! There are lots of photos as well that I took along our journey :)

We drove down to NYC from Ontario, Canada - day 1 of our trip is all about the road trip, with a stop in Scranton, PA along the way - we%26#39;re both huge fans of the show, The Office, and wanted to visit it%26#39;s ';home';!

On our trip in NYC, we visited the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for the Cherry Blossom Festival, American Museum of Natural History, American Folk Art Museum, Central Park, and tons of restaurants (mostly vegetarian ones!), many shops and areas of NYC, plus more!

    Here is the blog address:

    http://poolieandloolie.blogspot.com

If it makes it easier for people, I can post the written parts of the blog on here for you to read - I don%26#39;t mind doing that! I just like how on the blog, I%26#39;ve matched the text up with photos from the trip, too :)

I%26#39;ve also posted all of my trip photos here:

    http://picasaweb.google.com/laurenbeth

I%26#39;d love to hear your comments - feel free to comment on the blog or on the Picasa web album, as I don%26#39;t tend to check this forum quite as frequently.

BTW - we had a FANTASTIC time in NYC! :)

Our Vacation to NYC (from April 30th - May 4th), a journal!

Also - I%26#39;ve only posted the first day from the journal so far on the blog, with more to come very shortly - it takes a while to type up everything :)

The photos are all there on the Picasa though! :)

Our Vacation to NYC (from April 30th - May 4th), a journal!

Can%26#39;t wait to read the rest about your trip. The Cherry Blossoms looks gorgeous!

Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed the layout of your Trip Report! At first I couldn%26#39;t understand how the entries went from Bergen to a cruise ship! Yeah, a bit slow. The ship looks great. So many pools! Never been on a cruise yet so found those entries fascinating. Looking forward to the rest of the NYdays.

Oh dear. It seems to end on a cliffhanger - you%26#39;re stranded in North Bergen, NJ! I hope you made it to NYC eventually.

haha...a bit of a cliffhanger, yes :) I have four more days of things to post! It is just a matter of finding the time to post it...as you can see, we got back on the 4th, and I just started posting about it now :) I hope to post the next journal entry sometime this afternoon or this evening!

Captain%26#39;s Blog Stardate 1313.5 .... the Enterpirse has left the Achilles Gallaxy and is now proceeding at warp drive to the Dunder Mifflin constellation in the binary star system of Scraton. Starfleet has ordered the Enterprise to investigate the peculiar behavior of the power-hungry sycophant Dwight Schrute who is attempting a mutinous rebellion (with the help of his female consort Angela) to overthrow the current maniacal leader Michael Scott. I have ordered a landing party to beam down and conduct field investigation to confirm the suspicion that the rebelion is being sponsored by Klingon saboteurs.

Captain%26#39;s Blog Supplemental ..... Spock has just informed me that his mother will be arriving from the planet Vulcan this weekend and plans to stay with us while Doctor McCoy removes a bunion from her big toe.

    ';Oh no ..... not your mother!!!';

    ';Now Jim, don%26#39;t do this. You know my mom is always welcome to stay with us.';

I have checked the Starship manual and it appears that Spock is within his rights but I have also sent an envoy to Starfleet command protesting the appearance of the %26#39;nagging hypercritical nit picker%26#39; Spock calls mom. I now suspect a mutiny and have put the entire vessel on %26#39;high alert%26#39; till the %26#39;intruder%26#39; returns to her home planet.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjcHsnbZQ7A

I would think NYC would be a disappointment after seeing Scranton and Wilkes Barre!!

Captain’s Blog Stardate 1346.8 ..... unable to locate the Scranton system on our Starfleet’s ‘AAA Galactic Guide to the Galaxy’, the Starship Enterprise was forced to pull over at a rest stop on I 95 to ask for directions in a fill up station and to use the rest room facilities. Apparently we missed an exit ramp near the Adromeda solar system and were subsequently forced to abort the entire mission. I have sent an urgent request to Starfleet to install a GPS system in the Starship Enterprise at the next retooling station.

Captain’s Blog Supplemental ..... Lieutenant Spock has just blatantly ignored one of my standing orders and has now been confined to his quarters in anticipation on Starfleet disciplinary action. A disagreement arose over ship personnel that escalated into a possible conflict of galatic dimensions.

    “Jim ..... who’s Gary?”

“Gary is just some guy I used to know from the Starfleet Academy.”

“Ah ..... then why is Gary’s number on your private tri-corder Captain?”

“Well I had to call him last week .... ah ..... to discuss ..... ah ..... recent developments in Klingon military tactics.”

“Oh yeah ..... then tell me Jim. How come I also just found Gary’s phaser stashed behind the molecular transporter ‘thingy’ ..... and it was still set to ‘stun’?”

“Okay .... so I’m busted. Me and Commander Gary met last week to discuss military tactics .... and then one thing lead to another and we had a couple of beers ..... but that’s it. I swear!”

“Just some guy huh ..... Klingon military tactics right ..... well I don’t know WHAT to believe anymore Jim”

“But Spock he’s just some guy.”

“Jim you monster ..... I hate you ..... I hate you ..... I hate you!!!!”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhhFzE5O5U

I now suspect a possible mutinous uprising in the making on the USS Enterprise and have relieved Spock of his duties. I have also placed ‘Sulu’ as %26#39;Second in Command%26#39; until Spock comes back to his senses and apologizes.

If you wanted to visit %26#39;The Office%26#39; home, then you would need to go to Slough Uk ;-)

I would advise you NEVER do that.

Okay, Day 2 is now posted with pics! :) No more worries about being stranded in Scranton or New Jersey... we%26#39;re actually in NYC now :D Our ';Day 2'; of the trip involved lots of shopping %26amp; visiting Soho/Greenwich.

Hope you enjoy reading it! I%26#39;ll be posting the rest of the days shortly!

  • Steakhouse for Anniversary dinner?

I%26#39;ve posted asking for restaurant suggestions for our anniversary dinner in the past, but after looking at menus, the wife is a little too fussy for a ';fancy'; meal ;)

She would like a nice steak dinner, I%26#39;ve looked up some past posts but would like current suggestions.

We are going to Avenue Q at 2pm on June 28th and would like to do dinner some time after that. What is a decent spot where we won%26#39;t be rushed out? I am looking towards Wolfgang%26#39;s or Del Frisco%26#39;s - one that would be better than the other or somewhere else completely, keeping it mind it is an anniversary dinner?

    Also, do either take reservations?

Thanks for your help again! This should be the last dinner question ;)

    Steakhouse for Anniversary dinner?

Yikes, my first post was oddly spaced, hard to read, so let me try it again.

I no longer eat beef, but Delmonico%26#39;s was my favorite for a special occasion steak house. Historic building, classic ';old time'; NYC atmosphere, very comfortable seating, tables spaced more widely apart than in most NYC restaurants so you%26#39;re not unwittingly eavesdropping on your neighbors%26#39; conversation, attentive service without being intrusive or fawning. Judging from the recent reviews on, e.g., it%26#39;s still well regarded and perhaps about to be even more so: Rick Laakkonen -- former chef at, e.g., the River Cafe -- was just recently hired.

    Steakhouse for Anniversary dinner?

I%26#39;ll take a look at them as well, Thanks!

Also looked at Luger%26#39;s however, it doesn%26#39;t look like a date night type of steakhouse, although the reviews are spectacular.

Looking at Delmonico%26#39;s menu - and I noticed it on a few other NYC Steakhouse menu%26#39;s - Double Porterhouse and Double Rib Chop.... does that imply for two? Some other spell it out as Steak for Two, I don%26#39;t want to assume!

Delmonico%26#39;s is only open Mon-Fri - so that is no good, looked great too!

    Other suggestions?

    Have you considered Strip House?

Do you realize you%26#39;ll get out of the matinee around 4:15? I don%26#39;t think you want to have dinner at that hour. I think you either need to plan on going some place for a drink or maybe do something fun like a cruise.

As for a restaurant, steakhouses in NYC are the least romantic places I can think of. Strip House is one of the less testosterone fueled options but the decor is early bordello. Kitsch but not particularly cozy imo. When you say your wife is too fussy for a fancy meal, what do you mean?

I%26#39;d head to the lobby lounge of the Mandarin Oriental for a drink (or some other nice drink place) and then I%26#39;d go to Cafe des Artistes where she can get steak or most other things. It%26#39;s historic, it%26#39;s romantic, it%26#39;s pretty and you can book it on opentable

What is the in place at the Mandarin Oriental to have a few drinks? MObar?

No, the lobby lounge has a lovely view and on a Sunday at 4:30 or so shouldn%26#39;t be too crowded. There%26#39;s also the View at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square near the theater or the bar at the Renaissance hotel I think is also open now and has a view.

A pleasant walk? Or just take a taxi?

We%26#39;ll be going from our hotel in the Times Square area to the NY Waterways pier at 38th street for a 3:00 pm cruise. The distance is manageable, but wondering if it%26#39;s a nice enough walk? Any suggested routes? Just take a taxi?

A pleasant walk? Or just take a taxi?

I would not describe that walk as pleasant, but that%26#39;s not to say you shouldn%26#39;t do it. You might find it interesting.

You might trying walking down 42nd and making a left just before you get wet.

A pleasant walk? Or just take a taxi?

I%26#39;d take the bus, either the M42 or the M34. Nice street view, cheap, but it%26#39;s very slow.

I think that%26#39;s easily walkable. But take a cab if it rains. As far as route, it%26#39;s all about the same. So, I don%26#39;t have any suggestions.

I%26#39;m pretty sure that NY Waterways has a free bus service to the pier. Check out their website.

    Desperate housewives shopping in SOHO

What street or areas in Soho can you recommend for

shopping? We like Cold Creek and Jones of New York style lines. But are open to new lines of clothing.

    Desperate housewives shopping in SOHO

At the bottom of this page are links to shopping maps, including Soho:

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60763-s405/New-York-鈥?/a>

    There%26#39;s also http://artseensoho.com/map.html.

Soho and Nolita shopping is a bit ';younger'; and more urban than Coldwater Creek and Jones of New York. (Sorry to say, but we have a legal limit on pastels in NYC, and I believe there%26#39;s only 1 Coldwater Creek in Manhattan, 1 in Staten Island and 1 in Queens...)

You might like the Soho branch of Bloomingdale%26#39;s and Vera Wang.

Otherwise, I%26#39;d steer you toward Loehmann%26#39;s, Macy%26#39;s, Barney%26#39;s, Bloomingdale%26#39;s, Brooks Brothers, Lord and Taylor, Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor%26#39;s LOFT, and maybe Talbot%26#39;s.

    Desperate housewives shopping in SOHO

Macy%26#39;s has a lot of Jones... Its what I buy for business travel because it never wrinkles...even if some man puts his briefcase on top of the jacket in the overhead bin. (The black suits QB - pastels dont touch this body!)

I had no clue we have a Cold Creek here....

You cant imagine the shopping we have here! Certainly look in Soho - there is a weird mix of designer and American Eagle type stuff now.... But, check the discounters like Loehmann%26#39;s, Filenes, Century 21 (if you have patience - I tend to look only at the new racks of brands - not the jumbled end of season stuff they shove together on racks by sizes). Loehmanns and Filenes normally have a lot of Jones NY and Jones Sport. And, if you have time for Woodbury Commons (outlet center, but it takes a whole day) there are several Jones stores there.

French Connection, Club Monaco and Anthropolgie have stores in Soho (but also in other locations in Manhattan) and might have some things you%26#39;d like. Look at their websites. I think you may do better in some of the dept. stores (like Lord %26amp; Taylor) in midtown but Soho is fun for looking for accessories and the odd top etc.

Help with a quick/cheap place to eat near YMCA W63rd St.

We are traveling to NYC June 25th with our Girl Scout Troop (10 girls 16 years old) and will be staying at the West SIde Y. By the time we get there it will be lunch time. I am looking for a place close by to grab a quick bit to eat. We will have been awake since 5:00am (coming from Raleigh, NC) so food will be important before we begin our exploration. Any help would be great as far as sights/restaurants/tours, etc. We have tickets to see Billy Elliot on Friday night! I am so excited...

If you really want to stay within or near your budget, you could consider some of the hotels in Long Island City or the part of Queens that isn%26#39;t far from Manhattan. They are usually near the subway or bus routes that will get you into the middle of Manhattan in around 20 minutes. Okay looking hotels are Howard Johnson Express Queens, Days Inn Long Island City and the Pan American Hotel.

We just got $139 a night on hotwire for Manhattan Crowne Plaza in Times Square. Not my favorite location-wise to stay, but this is a last minute trip and it looks fine. I%26#39;d book something cancellable and then look at last minute deals later

Thank you all for the replies, I%26#39;ll check out the leads!

    Hi!

I bid on a room through Priceline and got the Grand Hyatt (next to Grand Central Station) for $115 for 6 nights in June. Maybe that麓s something you麓d want to check out.
