Long NYC Layover

On our trip back from Ireland this July. We have a long layover in JFK before our connection, on the order of 8 hours. Our original idea was to go and see some of the sights with our traveling companions during this time. As luck would have it, our companions are no re-routed through Atlanta (back to NC) while we are on the original flight, eventually back to Maine.

We still intend to do a little sight seeing during this long layover. My thought was to go out of the baggage claim area and negotiate with a cab driver for a set price on an ';excursion'; to some of the major sights at a set price. Is this a possibility? Any suggestions for a like 5 hour tour? Thanks for any suggestions.
