Time From JFK to a Show

Wanting peoples opinions on if i%26#39;m mad trying to make a show on the day I arrive in New York.

I arrive at JFK at 2.45pm and the show I want to see starts at 7pm

In that time I have to go through passport control, get luggage, get a taxi to just south of Central Park, check in at my hotel and then get to 15th Street

Is that doable? I%26#39;d need to leave myself a bit of leeway too in case my flight is late

I%26#39;m thinking this is a bit risky, what do you think?

It%26#39;s doable If you can get out of the airport like in a hour or so and your flight is on time.. I think you will be on the move but you should make it. I guess you like living on the edge a bit lol.

2.45pm - land

4.00pm - Leave airport in taxi

4.45pm - reach hotel and check in

5.00pm - leave hotel

5.30pm - arrive at theatre

Gives me an hour and a half leeway and I think none of those times are too unrealistic

If the plane arrives on time is another matter tho!!

Yes that%26#39;s the way I look at it also. Just hope for not too much traffic and plane lands on time. There is no other time to see this show or day? If not I guess take your chances.

Hi. My family and I will visit NYC next July, our plane will land at terminal 8, at 10:30 PM. But my question is what is the best way to get at that hour to Manhattan? Is it safe to take public transport (Airtrain, subway) at that hour? or Is it better to take a taxi at the airport? In your experience how long do you think that take us go through migration and customs?

There is no problem taking public transportation at night. My only concern is that if you are traveling with little ones, they will be exhausted and not do well on the transfers.

We%26#39;ve got a late arrival at JFK as well. We get in at 11pm. We%26#39;re flying in from elsewhere in the US so won%26#39;t have the hassle of going through customs.

Yes, cab fare between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan is a flat charge of $45, plus tolls %26amp; tip, so your $60 estimate is fine.

We are staying at 569 Lexington Ave (Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel)and wondered if there are any decent cinemas close by such as an IMAX screen one? I won%26#39;t quite be 21 whilst there so at night we can%26#39;t exactly go out to a bar drinking etc so thought maybe one of the nights go see a movie as we are not into Broadway type shows.

For my visit to New York next week, I will buy CityPass online. I have the option to print an E-ticket 鈥?a printout confirming my purchase 鈥?which I will redeem at any of the participating CityPass attractions for an actual CityPass booklet as per website info.

I wonder if I will need to wait a long time (say more than 10 minutes) in line to get my printout with the booklet? Or can I redeem it in a snap?

PS, when I did a web search for reviews of easyclick, I did find a few people saying they%26#39;d used them (for other locations besides NYC) with no problems. I think you just have to be careful about how the rate is described. Kayak features the lowest possible rate in the search. Then once you click through to it, often the rate for YOUR situation may be higher. (ie don%26#39;t book a government rate if you%26#39;re not entitled to it)

I booked a hotel in New York few weeks ago on easyclicktravel.com after I was redirected from Kayak.

There was no problem at all with my reservation.

On a later search there I saw that their prices are very reasonable (I was looking for NY and Chicago).

I%26#39;ve used EasyClickTravel in the past and I consider them 100% legit.

I used EazyClickTravel a couple of years ago when visiting Las Vegas.

It was one of their ';secret'; hotels where the name is not revealed until after you pay, but being Vegas it was very clear from the description which hotel it was. I got a rate about 30% cheaper than was available on any other on-line site.

I had no problems at all with the booking - I was even able to modify the dates of my trip slightly without any difficulty, and I%26#39;d have no reason not to use them again in the future.

I think asking others for cancellation policy is problematic. I have booked on sites where one hotel has one policy and another is different. Sometimes the cheapest prices have the least flexiblity. I would recommend looking carefully at each policy as you book.... and each time that you book.

This is much safer than relying on the anecdotal evidence of other TA users.

Great rate for Hampton Inn, Chelsea.

While researching hotel prices for my next NYC trip I came across what seems like a great rate for the Hampton Inn, Chelsea. For the dates of 13th Feb. 2010-18th Feb 2010 ebookers.com are quoting 拢392.50 for a 2 queen bedded room, by my calculations that works out at around $118 per night.

It%26#39;s no good for me because I need a suite but thought the info might be of some use for others planning a trip next year.

Go to the Ziegfeld on 54th between 6th and 7th - Not exactly an IMAX but an old fashion BIG screen theater that seats 1100 with a great sound system. Don%26#39;t worry - it%26#39;s usually pretty empty. They are currently showing the new Star Trek movie.

Fuerza Bruta - A Must See

Last night my wife and I went to the TKTS booth at the South Street Seaport and got tickets to Fuerza Bruta. We had never heard of it, but it sounded pretty interesting. It was absolutely amazing:

It was half Blue Man Group, half Cirque du Soleil, half anger management class, half The Matrix, half rave on meth, and half audience participation. Yes, I know that is too many halves, but it is a large show.

Much of the action takes place above you. Actors are running on treadmills, crashing through stuff, running on walls suspended by wires, or swimming in a transparent pool just inches above your head. The music is loud and funky. You are continually moved around by the crew. You will get wet. You may have something broken over your head. It is jaw dropping spectacular. In a word - WOW!

Recommended for: This is a great show for teens. It%26#39;s a great show for anyone who loves amazing visual and technical excitement. It%26#39;s a great show if you liked Blue Man or Cirque du Soliel

Not Recommended for: Hater of loud music. People with limited mobility. You will be called upon to stand and move for about an hour.

Fuerza Bruta - A Must See

Yes, I agree Fuerza Bruta is a must-see. We saw it in January and we also got our tickets at the South Street Seaport.

I enjoyed a glass of wine beforehand after a very long line with only one bartender.

It was also interesting to see people of all ages there, but I personally wouldn%26#39;t bring pre-teens of which I saw 3 or 4. In the above water part one of the women was wearing white and slithering above you - art yes, but I think somewhat inappropriate for such youngsters.

Can you rec a good spot for dinner before the show near the theater that might help us get in the right frame of mind? There are four of us...two teens (15 and 19) and their very young at heart parents.

After reading your description of this show I couldn%26#39;t quite ';wrap my head around it'; so I did a ';Lotus'; and looked at the You Tube. :D After seeing the You Tube I%26#39;m still not sure how they choreograph all that action @ once. It must be quite a performance!

I was lucky enough to get a piece of styrofoam broken over my head! We loved it but you really are packed together tightly. I recommend leaving your handbag at home (mine was jammed into my side during the show), don%26#39;t bring anyone under 5 feet tall with you (a boy around the age of 10 had to have had trouble breathing being so squashed in), and don%26#39;t wear open toed shoes or sandals. If you don%26#39;t want to get soaking wet at the end of the show, be sure to move away from the middle of the room.

It%26#39;s an incredible experience!

My wife and I had a great dinner at the Blue Water Grill right on Union Square. It was absolutely delicious. We had some of the best calmari we ever ate, a delicious lobster bisque, a delicious sushi roll and some other goodies. The desert was molten chocolate cake with amazing malted milk ice cream. MMMMM.

Union Square Cafe is indeed a great place to eat. It%26#39;s one of the best in the City. We went to Blue Water Grill because it was much less expensive. You will not be disappointed eating at either.

My favorite piece of artwork is the zoetrope graffitti in the old abondoned Myrtle Avenue station between Dekalb and the Manhattan Bridge on the %26#39;Q%26#39; and %26#39;B%26#39; line in Brooklyn. If you want to take the NY Water Taxi which is a fun and easy way to go, it stops at 35th st. %26amp; the East River and 90th st. %26amp; the East River.

Near the 35th st. stop, the Affinia Dumont and the Murray Hill East Suites would be relatively close. OR, just bid on Priceline if there are just 1 or 2 of you. I%26#39;d bid Empire state area or midtown east and you should be able to get something for ~$120/night. I have...a few years ago. Most of the spaces are taken up by people with permits. There was very limited metered parking, so that may not work for long term parking.

I usuually suggest that people park at the main White Plains Train Station because they have a huge garage there and can handle long term. There is a service that takes people directly to Westchester County Airport from there (and back again, of course) that was developed due to the lack of parking at the Airport (not to mention the expense!) It%26#39;s called AIRLINK.

Here is a link to the Airlink Schedule. Don%26#39;t have info on fares, although I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re minimal. Also could look up parking fees for you at the WP Train Station if that helps, or you could contact them yourself. Let me know.

Building my ';proposal'; trip

Hey Everyone,

I%26#39;ve been trolling on this site for a while now, and I%26#39;ve learned a lot. I appreciate all the help/suggestions I%26#39;ve already received.

I have this surprise trip to NYC in the works and I plan on proposing to my girlfriend. I am flying in to LGA at noon on July 3 for a 4-night stay.

This will be my fourth NYC trip and her first. We are both 25 years old.

So here%26#39;s what I%26#39;ve cemented so far:

I found a $190 rate at the Times Square Renaissance on easyclicktravel.com, then claimed that lower rate on Marriott.com.

Since Mariott.com guarantees lowest prices, they matched the easyclick rate plus took another 25% off, making my total daily rate just $142! So, as you can probably tell, I%26#39;m excited about that.

I got 1/2 price tickets on the front row of the mezzanine for Avenue Q for the first night, and also got two bleacher seats for the Yanks-Blue Jays for the 1:05 p.m. game on Monday, July 6 (our last full day there). I don%26#39;t really care about the game, but I just want to see the new digs for an hour or two - don%26#39;t want to use half a day there or anything.

As of now, I plan on dropping our stuff off at the hotel, then finding a quiet place in the park the afternoon we get there to propose, then going to a romantic early dinner.

But with no reservations yet, and show tickets already -- Avenue Q, very romantic, right! :) -- for the first night, those plans are fluid and could be moved to Saturday, the 4th of July afternoon.

So, thanks to you guys, I%26#39;ve started putting an ';eats'; list together for places to go throughout the trip. But I%26#39;m also trying to decide on ';The dinner'; after I propose, whether it be Fri or Sat.

I%26#39;ve looked through old threads, seeing that the River Cafe and OIBL look to be the most popular. But my GF isn%26#39;t the most exotic eater in the world (We will go somewhere nice and she want a Caesar Salad, normally)

Now that I%26#39;ve bored you into submission, here%26#39;s what I need:

- The most romantic dinner I can find for a picky, non- prix-fixe type of eater.

- Smart ways to use our time when it comes to sightseeing (one area per day?, double-decker bus, etc.?)

-Any suggestions on what could make this trip as memorable as possible.

- Some extra money to pay for the ring :)

I proposed in NYC in 2005 at the Top Of The Rock. We ate at Del Friscos afterwards. They took very good care of us with a call from me in advance. Let the restaurant know the occasion and they will make it special.

Based on some other trip reports with proposals in them, I think you might want to propose earlier than later.

For sightseeing, divide the City into neighborhoods. I would do a day of Lower Manhattan including the Staten Island Ferry, Century 21, Broadway walk, Wall Street, and City Hall. Continue past City Hall and make a right turn down Worth Street into Chinatown for lunch.

Spend a day wandering around Greenwich Village [East and West] and Soho.

Spend a day at Midtown and museum or store hopping.

The Hopstop Iphone App only receives 2 stars with nearly 1,000 reviews..many of which from New Yorkers saying it doesn%26#39;t find basic addresses and that you may as well just use the regular website in the browser instead.
